Remember the works of the Lord.
Psalm 111:4 He has made His wonderful works to be remembered; The Lord is gracious and full of compassion.
The devil loves to remind us of our past sins, failures, mistakes, hurts, and painful memories. He wants us to keep looking back so that we cannot move forward and fail to live the life God has planned for us but God does not want us to carry the weight of our past. Once we have truly repented of our sins and do not repeat them again and again, He says, “I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; and I will not remember your sins” (Isaiah 43:25).
If God has forgiven our sins and chosen not to remember them, why should we keep carrying the burden of them? God’s Word also says, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past” (Isaiah 43:18). Instead of filling our minds with regrets and failures, God wants us to remember His goodness, faithfulness, and the wonderful things He has done for us. Take time to remember the prayers God has answered. Write down your testimonies. When you go through difficult times, read them again. Remind yourself of God’s promises and how He has helped you in the past. Remember the works of the Lord.
This is exactly what Deborah did after God gave Israel victory over Sisera. Instead of talking about how strong the enemy was, she remembered what God had done for His people in the past. She sang in Judges 5:4-5, “Lord, when You went out from Seir, When You marched from the field of Edom, The earth trembled and the heavens poured, The clouds also poured water; The mountains gushed before the Lord, This Sinai, before the Lord God of Israel.”
Deborah was remembering how God revealed Himself to His people. By remembering these events, Deborah reminded the people that their God was powerful. He was not weak. Even the mountains trembled before Him. Deborah mentioned Mount Sinai because it was there that God revealed Himself to Israel, gave them His Law, and made a covenant with them. She wanted the people to remember that the same God who showed His power at Sinai was the same God who had just given them victory over their enemies. Deborah understood an important truth: when we remember God’s works, our faith grows stronger. Instead of dwelling on our past failures, we should remember God’s faithfulness. The God who helped us yesterday is the same God who will help us today and tomorrow.
Prayer from Psalm 77: 11 – 12: I will remember the works of the Lord; Surely I will remember Your wonders of old. 12 I will also meditate on all Your work, And talk of Your deeds. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
