Bless the Lord, O My Soul.
Psalm 103:1 Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name!”
David was not speaking to other people. He was speaking to himself. He was speaking to his mind, his will, and his emotions. He was commanding every part of his being to bless the Lord. Sometimes we do not feel like praising God. Sometimes our minds are distracted by the pressures and worries of life. Yet David teaches us that praise is not merely a feeling. It is a choice. He deliberately called his soul to worship God. To bless the Lord is to express gratitude, thanksgiving, honour, and praise to Him for who He is and for all that He has done. It is recognizing that every good thing we have comes from His hand. When God does something great in our lives, we should not delay our gratitude. We should thank Him immediately. We should testify of His goodness. We should tell others what He has done for us.
David reminds us, “Bless the Lord, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name!” Every answered prayer, every provision, every victory, and every act of God’s faithfulness deserves our thanksgiving. Do not wait for a more convenient time. Bless the Lord today. Thank Him today. Tell someone about His goodness today. As David also declared: “I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.” (Psalm 34:1). May praises become our first response and our continual lifestyle.
Prayer: Not unto me, O Lord, not unto me, but to Your name be all the glory. Thank You for Your mercy toward me. Thank You for Your truth that has guided me, sustained me, and never failed me. Everything I have and everything I am is because of You. Teach me to be quick to give thanks and faithful to testify of Your goodness. Let praise continually be in my mouth, and let my life bring glory to Your name. The glory belongs to You alone. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
